Not what we expected
I’m sure the hosts are nice and it seems like they have good intentions; however, this rental was not the property we expected based on the pictures and descriptions when we booked the listing (May 2021) and as it currently stands (August 2021). Looking at previous reviews it looks like many people have enjoyed themselves here (that’s great!), but if you are a couple like us looking for a small vacation away from people for privacy then this is not the place for you. It was not clear just how close the “cottage” was to the owner’s actual home. You have to drive into their shared driveway, into their backyard and are footsteps away from their house. So the view you wake up to is their actual house. We understood this was previously a garage converted into a “guesthouse/cottage”, but the owner still uses the garage that you’re attached to (didn’t know that was still an actively used garage based on listing) and you’ll feel like you’re going to run into someone whenever you walk outside, which is uncomfortable when again the whole point of our trip was privacy. Use of the river docks was confusing since it says it’s available for your use in the listing, but then there is a page in the guest binder that says you can use for 1 or 2 days/nights of your stay, but to let the owners know, or you can use when they’re not home. Every time we walked to the dock the owner was working on it, so it’s not exactly quiet and again there’s no privacy, so we never actually used it, which was one of the main attractions for us and what we had planned on for the majority of our stay. We ended up trying to find activities elsewhere, some of which were fun, but we were disappointed because that wasn’t why we had booked this location. Not to mention there are numerous questionable not-to-code violations made to the cottage renovation that are hazardous. The hosts make it clear that they are only a call or knock away if you have any questions or are unhappy with something, but we knew there was nothing we could change and it was too late to do anything different, so we made do with what we could and ended up leaving earlier than what we had booked for. Overall, this listing is misleading and there needs to be photos showing the FULL property you will be staying on so you can make a more well-informed decision if this is the place for you. Unfortunately this wasn’t for us and it was a huge letdown because this was our big getaway vacation for the year that we cut short.

Bill and Robin were great hosts. We were looking for something quiet and relaxing and we found it. We spent Thanksgiving and the weekend after there, despite not having a stove or oven, we were able to prepare our meal with the use of the grill and hot plate that was provided. The beauty of the river and surrounding property was great. Being able to wake up and go sit on the decks and have a cup of coffee was just the remedy to help decompress and recharge. Shepherds town was great with the first weekend of Christmas shopping as was Harper’s Ferry. Harper’s Ferry is always something special but we really enjoyed Shepherdstown’s Main Street and stores. Charlestown was a bust, not very much shopping on Main Street, very disappointed that more money was spent on gambling then their Main Street. The Bavarian Inn and lodge was a pleasure to have a meal at. There is elegant dining or you can eat in the pub area for a more casual environment. The food was excellent and service was fantastic. We have been talking about finding a place to go every year for Thanksgiving and I think we have found it. We look forward to heading back next year and maybe even a couple time in between.

Great little cottage
This is the most adorable cottage. Its clean, it's homey and has everything you need. The property is lovely. Every night we ate dinner along the water. Tubed during the day, fire at night. The owners are a lovely couple who are there if you need them and very helpful. You see them but they give you space. They have the sweetest Golden, her name is Chloe. They also have a golf cart which was a ton of fun to drive around the community. I felt very safe and would visit again. Loved the area. My dog and I hiked on a few of the battlegrounds near by. This property is worth seeing and experiencing. I would give this experience a 4.5. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 is that the cottage is located on the same property as the owners, directly behind their home. They again, are a lovely couple and gave you space and were very accomodating. This is just something I wish I would have known ahead of time. If this was mentioned in the reviews or write-up, I did not see it and that is on me. :)

Robin and I grew up in Johnstown, PA. We always had a dream of living on the water. We got lucky when we found this gorgeous place. Well not when we bought it, a concrete rambler that was a mess. You could not see the river from the house. We completely rebuilt the main house in 2008 adding the ultimate master bedroom. We added the Cottage in 2005, for family, friends and guests. It has been a labor of love. We have lived here since 2003. We tell everyone that we live on vacation. We would love to share our little piece of paradise with you.
